The “Little Ones” dance class is an introduction to dance with the primary goal to foster a love of movement. Throughout the year the child will be familiarized with the basic composition of a class. The dance vocabulary covered will be steps and movements that 2 ½ year olds can master in the subjects of ballet, tap, and tumbling. This dance class also uses the creative movement technique by adding special activities that guide the child to explore movement independently. For example, a scarf or tambourine can allow the dancer to use their own physical expression while creating an understanding about levels or rhythm. The structure of the class provides a fun and nurturing environment to allow the individual student to grow.
These dance classes cover a basis of movement found in all dance forms. The classes include ballet, tap, jazz, and tumbling. The goals of Pre-school I, II, III, and Combo are to foster creativity, freedom, expression of movement, and a love of dance. The class includes concepts that are found in an older child’s dance class. The concepts will prepare the students for the year following Pre-school III when they graduate to ballet, tap or jazz single subjects. One or two creative components are also included during the class. By the end of the year the students can dance set work independent of the teacher, memorize simple exercises and sequences, and make a start at musical interpretation.
Contemporary and lyrical class is a fusion of jazz, ballet, and modern techniques. This class uses the dance vocabulary along with developing an emotional connection to the movement. Contemporary continues to develop the dancer’s strength, flexibility, and coordination of the body while allowing the individual to express a story or emotional context through dance vocabulary. This dance class will also incorporate guided or structured improvisation segments allowing the individual to articulate emotion through movement.
Our school offers a variety of tap classes for all ages and levels. The students are taught traditional tap technique. After mastering the basics, our students advance to studying rhythm tap, Broadway tap, syncopation, and street tap.
Dancemakers offers tumbling classes specializing in floor work. The focus is on strength, agility, and flexibility while executing specific skills for their level. Placement in level I, II, III, or IV is based on ability.
At Dancemakers, ballet is taught using a modified version of the Vaganova method. Ballet classes are graded according to the age group of the students and the level of previously acquired skills. The curriculum also includes beginner levels for each age group. Our ballet program is under the direction of Carol Lee.
Jazz class provides the fundamentals of jazz technique which will develop the student’s coordination with isolations of the body along with rhythm and dynamic changes. This dance class will also increase flexibility and strength of the muscles. Beginning Jazz will present the fundamentals and vocabulary of jazz technique that will provide the student the platform to advance. The upper level classes will focus on turns, leaps, and proper placement of the body to further the individual student. Also the student will be introduced to different stylized forms of jazz like musical theater jazz, jazz funk, and hip-hop.
